"Rejoice and be glad, for your reward will be great in heaven." Here, in a nutshell, is the Christian belief about the afterlife. We trust that heaven is open to believers who accept the gift of salvation and follow the way of the Lord, even (or especially) when that way is difficult!
The beatitudes in today's Gospel give us a program for following the path to heaven. These famous words offer a kind of twofold image. There are, on the one hand, the beatitudes about what we should do and be: poor in spirit, meek, merciful, clean of heart, and peacemakers. Such qualities are reflections of the nature of God in whose image we are meant to live. When we embrace and reflect this image to the world, there is no doubt we are walking on the path of God's will.
Then, there are also the beatitudes about what we are called to endure: mourning, hunger for righteousness, persecutions and insults due to our belief in Jesus. These are the trials that often beset the life of a faithful Christian--admittedly more so in some ages and areas than in others. But Jesus makes it clear that even these trials and struggles are a sign that a Christian is on the right path, not that God has abandoned him or her, but that the reward of heaven lies around the corner.
One of the greatest consolations of our faith is that even when life does not unfold according to our own perfect designs, even when there is suffering to deal with, even when we do not have great success in the eyes of the world, we can maintain hope and peace as we await the "reward" of the just. Las lecturas de este domingo nos invitan a estar siempre en constante búsqueda del Señor. Las personas sencillas y humildes solo pueden esperar en Dios, son los que con su fe en medio de las tribulaciones salen al frente de sus dificultades. Y no se diga en cuestión de justicia es su baluarte. La humildad en estos tiempos no tiene cabida, es más, muchos ni siquiera saben el significado de la humildad. "El Catecismo de la Iglesia Católica" en el número 2540 nos da pautas de cómo poner en práctica la humildad. "La envidia procede con frecuencia del orgullo; el bautizado ha de esforzarse por vivir en la humildad".
Tengamos cuidado esmerado en este asunto ya que en nuestra época muchas veces no se aprecia el llevar una vida sencilla y humilde. El ser humilde consiste en confiar en Dios, es también la verdad sobre nosotros mismos. La persona verdaderamente humilde no se infla de orgullo y vanidad, sino que es capaz de llevar una vida equilibrada. San Pablo lo describe de otra manera. "El que se gloría, que se gloríe en el Señor" (1 Cor 1, 31). Qué bello sería el apreciar con sencillez de corazón el ser hijos de Dios, el querernos como hermanos y hermanas. Final- mente, quiero dedicar unas frases al sermón del monte o bienaventuranzas, donde el humilde tiene un papel muy importante. Alcanzar la pobreza de corazón, la mansedumbre, la misericordia, la capacidad de trabajar por la paz y la pureza del corazón es el reto de nuestra vida. Porque solo así podremos vivir felices. ¡Jesús, que es manso y humilde de corazón, tenga piedad de nosotros! ¿Qué piensa usted de la humildad? ¿Conoce personas sencillas y humildes en su vida?
